Do you know about the bird and the bee?
Well, do you? If not, then you’re in for a treat. The Bird and the Bee are a duo out of LA (wow, can you believe I’m into something outside of the 10001 zip code?) consisting of Greg Kurstin (bee) and Inara George (bird). According to their MySpace page, “Greg and Inara met a few years ago. Discovered a common love of jazz standards… nerded out for a couple of hours playing every song they knew… and then wrote and recorded a record together.”
George is the daughter ofLowell George, the late founder of the rock and roll group Little Feat.
After high school, Kurstin moved to New York City to study with Charles Mingus‘ piano player, Jaki Byard (ah, ok, here’s where the NYC part comes in). He’s in another band with Tommy Jordan called Geggy Tah who were signed by David Byrne him damn self to his Luaka Bop label.
The group has had a pretty successful run with their 2 only albums, these have stemmed a few singles and many (song) appearances in TV shows and movies.
In July of 2008 the Bird and The Bee did a live recording of 4 of their tracks, plus 1 new track at The Palms in Las Vegas. The tracks were: Again & Again (Bossa Nova Version), Fucking Boyfriend, Autumn Leaves, Man & Preparedness. This digital EP was sold exclusively on iTunes for just $4.49!
I myself first heard of TBATB by way of this video I thought was either a legit Mac commercial or video for the band. Turns out it’s neither as it was put together by NYU Art student, Dennis Aliu. Check out the video for “Again and Again” below. I’ve also added one of my favorite songs by them called “Preparedness”.

they performed here in singapore earlier this year and were awesome.
